The SPF Roofing FAQ Q. How long has Sprayed Polyurethane Foam (SPF) been around? A. It was developed during World War II for flotation. Q. Is it expensive? A. No, it is competitively priced with other commercial roofing systems. Heating and cooling costs drop an average of 30%. Q. Does it have formaldehyde in it? A. SPF contains no formaldehyde. Q. Does SPF absorb water like a sponge? A. Properly applied SPF is a completely closed cell material and will not absorb water. Q. Can you walk on it? A. Yes. SPF used for roofing has a compression strength of approximately 45 pounds per square inch. Q. Is SPF a good insulator? A. One of the best! It has a R factor of approximately R-6.5 per inch. Q. Will it stick to my roof or walls? A. SPF will adhere to almost all clean, dry surfaces. Q. How long will it last? A. SPF has been shown to last 20 years with no internal degradation. No one knows how long it will last if well maintained. Q. Will the foam crack on my roof or wall? A. Foam has excellent elongation and will "move" with the surface it is applied to. Q. Can foam withstand hurricanes? A. Buildings with SPF coated roofs or walls have survived storms better than those built with conventional building materials, because the foam is a "structural" material giving strength and flexibility to the surfaces it is applied on. Q. What is the service temperature range? A. From very cold (-100 F) to very hot (+225 F). Q. Can I buy the material and do it myself? A. No. Correctly spraying SPF requires special equipment and properly trained technicians. |
